After studying all day long, sometimes you fancy a drink and a chat with your friends. In Bamberg we like to go to the Sandstraße, which is right beneath the duomo. With the surrounding area - the Sandgebiet - it's basically the heart of the medieval town centre. The "Sandstraße" combines late medieval buildings with historic restaurants, such as the Schlenkerla, modern clubs and cozy bars...So there's something for everyone!
As soon as the sun comes out, the narrow alley is filled with people. Not only a lot of tourists want to have a look at the cobblestone-paved alley, but also the Bamberger like to spend their time here. One of our favourite evening-employment is to meet at the Schlenkerla and enjoy a "Steh-Bier", a Rauchbeer that we drink outside while standing infront of the building.
At the Elisabethenplatz not only the Church of Elisabeth but also the former civil hospital is located. Today, the hospital functions as a prison. It is said, that it's the prison with the nicest view in Germany. In fact, some of the cells face Klein Venedig, so the inmates probably have a much nicer view than we do...

Each year in August, the Sandstraße and surrounding area celebrate the "Sandkerwa", which is basically to honor the consecration of the Church of Elisabeth. Approx. 300,000 people want to be part of this occasion, a number das is astonishingly high, especially as the "Sandkerwa" is only 5 days. Main attraction isn't probably the Church but the many beer ventures and food trucks. But be aware that the crowd is huge and the Sandstraße narrow, so if you suffer from agoraphobia or don't like body contact with strangers, maybe the "Sandkerwa" isn't right for you...
Apart from that, the "Sandstraße" is a beautiful place to let go of all stress that studying and going to the daily lecture brings and spend some time with your friends.

Wenn man den ganzen Tag studiert und gelernt hat, hat man ja abends schon mal Lust auf ein bisschen Spaß und Gesellschaft. In Bamberg begibt man sich dann in die Sandstraße. Diese verläuft direkt unterhalb des Domes und bildet mit dem umliegenden Sandgebiet quasi das Herz der Altstadt. An der Oberen Sandstraße reiht sich ein spätmittelalterliches Gebäude an das nächste, ähnlich wie die Touristen in der gesamten Stadt. In der Sandstraße treffen altehrwürdige Gaststätten wie das Schlenkerla oder das Pizzini auf moderne Clubs, einen Irish Pub und lebendige Bars... Es ist also für jeden etwas dabei. Sobald es wärmer wird, ist in der Sandstraße eigentlich kein Durchkommen mehr möglich, da erstens die Touristen die enge Gasse verstopfen, aber auch die Einheimischen gerne gesellig rumstehen und plaudern. Besonders vor dem Schlenkerla steht immer eine Menschentraube, die ihr sogenanntes "Steh-Bier" genießt. Ob man ein Rauchbier genießen kann, ist natürlich eine andere Frage, aber das "Steh-Bier" ist sehr beliebt und trägt eindeutig zum Stadtbild bei.
Von der Sandstraße ist man innerhalb von 2 Minuten beim Dom und der neuen Residenz. Besonders spannend ist aber auch der Elisabethenplatz. Früher diente das Gebäude noch als Bürgerspital, heute ist es eine Justizvollzugsanstalt. Man munkelt, dass es das Gefängnis mit dem schönsten Ausblick Deutschlands sei. Tatsächlich schauen viele Zellen raus auf Klein Venedig, während die meisten Bewohner Bambergs nur auf eine schnöde Hausfassade, die Straße oder einen Garten blicken...

Jedes Jahr im August findest die Sandkerwa (fränkisch für Sandkirchweih) statt, ein Volksfest was auf dem kleinen Sandgebiet rund 300.000 Besucher anzieht - und das in nur 5 Tagen! Die Hauptattraktion sind dabei natürlich die vielen Getränkestände. Wer an Platzangst leidet oder nicht so auf Körperkontakt mit Fremden steht, sollte das Sandgebiet während der Kerwa meiden.
Davon abgesehen ist es ein schöner Ort um sich von der täglichen Vorlesung zu erholen und Zeit mit Freunden zu verbringen.
