Here is some fortaste of the guest lecture:
Hedeby started to be a very important harbour in the 8. century.
It connected scandinavia to europe. In the 11. century, it lost his significance.
In the end, the people moved on and the place was forgotten. Til it was
rediscovered at the end of the 19. century. There was an immense amount of
excavations and archaeological prospections from that time onwards. Although
not the entire place has been excavated yet, it was very important for the
research because it shows the complex development of an early medieval town. To
underline this importance, the archaeologists started to prepare the
application for admission to the UNESCO World Heritage over 14 years ago.
And last year, it was done. How the process from the first excavations to the World
Hertiage worked, will be explained to us in the guest lecture from Volker
Hilberg with the title „120 years of archaeological research in Hedeby. The
process from an excavation site to World Hertiage“.
We are looking forward to this exciting lecture!
